School Visit – Catholic Ladies College in Eltham

Peer Leaders at Catholic Ladies College in Eltham, Victoria generously gave up their lunchtime in order to learn more about their important role when Education Consultant Miranda McCallum from Peer Support Australia visited the school in March 2015.

They discussed the highlights and challenges of being a Peer Leader and the girls came up with some great suggestions and strategies as shown in the diagram below. Some of the benefits of the Program that were mentioned include:

  • “To encourage others no matter what”
  • “Thinking outside the box”
  • “Learning how to manage time”
  • “Learning how to talk to others”
  • “Having confidence”
  • “Having to be organised”
  • “Team work”

Miranda also spoke to Year 7 students about Peer Support and students left feeling enthusiastic about the Program and the skills they would learn.

Time was also spent talking to the coordinating teacher, Carey Webster, about the organization of the Program. She expressed an interest in sending more staff to train to ensure the Program’s success and longevity.

Maybe you could try a brainstorming activity like this in your school to remind the students about the benefits of Peer Support.
